Movie system outages
and
crews spewing "surliness"
have some saying that United leaves "a lot to be desired."
Some are
"amazed at the level of customer abuse."
But "good legroom in economy" and very "skilled" pilots
offer hope.

Because I must fly in and out of Denver frequently, I often end up on United. I never cease to be amazed at the level of customer abuse we continue to suffer at their hands. Delayed and cancelled flights are a big issue when one must connect to small town airports in the mountains. Last September, I was on a flight from Denver to Eagle that was cancelled due to weather and then told they could not get me on another flight for 2 days. Neither would they provide alternate (van)transportation to my ticketed destination.

United Airlines tend to come in for a lot of flak but I have flown about 250,000 miles
with them so far and should write a few words in their favour. I mostly fly the Tokyo-Chicago
round trip with domestic US flights also on UA. Recently, the flights have nearly all been on
time or early, except with genuine mitigating circumstances (very bad weather, sick passenger
requiring return to gate etc). The pilots are skilled and professional and always make periodic
announcements, particularly in unusual circumstances. Listening to the cockpit audio channel
gives a good idea how professional the crew are (I'm a pilot also). Frequent fliers can
take advantage of a very good program and good legroom in economy seating on United flights
with a good choice in partner airlines (Star Alliance). Complaints? The in flight entertainment
has occasionally been faulty, although I don't always miss it. The meals are pretty grim.
I take snacks. The cabin crew I've met have
in almost every case been skilled professionals: they may not be young bimbos but I'd rather
have people who know what they are doing. I will continue flying UA.

I have done the SFO-HKG route on United.
Flight times are NOT as convenient,
business class seats do not recline as spectacularly far and service is
not as good.

Hi,on outward flight there was no film or video/radio service on several seats. On the return from SFO the whole economy section was without any entertainment service at all.Although we were offered compensation forms to fill out, which we did,we were told (unoficially)that nothing would come of it.We've flown United several times and found them ok.But on the last trip from SFO the crew left a lot to be desired, ignoring calls, spilling hot tea over a passenger, and I detected a bit of surliness. There was also no information whatsoever from the flightdeck as to position, height etc.to compensate for no info from the screens in economy.
